Westminster Bridge

Tourists and traffic jostle on Westminster Bridge, London

Of all of London’s many sights and sounds, none is more iconic than the Big Ben. This 158 year old, 96 metre high clock tower has chimed its way into British consciousness, and for many (if not all) visitors is synonymous with the little island in the sea. Today, however, the clock stands silent as it crosses into the sixth month of a three-year long conservation and renovation effort. While there will still be chiming and tolling for select occasions, visitors to London will have to wait till 2020 to hear the hourly tolling of the tower’s bell over the city’s cacophony.
