The island church of Lake Bled
The Slovenes take fairytale weddings to a whole new level. Local lore holds that newlyweds, on the day of their wedding, must sail across Lake Bled, an impossibly blue alpine lake, to the country’s only island. The groom should then carry his bride up a flight of 99 stairs and into the Church of the Assumption of Mary, a gorgeous piece of 17th century Gothic architecture. Together, they must ring the church bell, make a wish, and then kiss in a life full of matrimonial bliss.
