In the lanes of Old Delhi
Despite being predated by a number of earlier settlements, the title of ‘Old’ Delhi (today) is reserved for Shahjahanabad, a 17th century walled city built during the height of the Mughal empire. Much of the area’s ‘old’-ness is attributed to its stunning collection of historic buildings that line lane upon winding lane. Many date from the ‘twilight’ era between waning Mughal and rising Colonial influence, and display unique aesthetic choices – such as pairing Roman columns with floral bas-reliefs, and arched lattice screens with louvered doorways.
