A stormy day at Noordwijk aan Zee
Founded over 800 years ago as a simple fishing village, Noordwijk aan Zee is today one of Netherlands’ most popular seaside resorts. With its gale force winds and icy North Sea waters, the place attracts few foreign tourists. It is, instead, a wildly popular haunt for the Dutch, who come here for everything between contemplative walks, authentic Dutch cafe fare, skinny dipping, and kite surfing. Venture a bit further in from the beach, and you’ll find a beautiful historic town, vast tulip fields, and the ubiquitous dykes and canals. It makes for a wonderful day trip from Amsterdam, offering the visitor a slice into a slightly more authentic Netherlands than the dildo-and-hash crowd-pullers of Amsterdam.
