Radhanagar Beach

Evening at Radhanagar Beach
In 2004, Time magazine rated an unnamed beach in the Andaman Islands as the best beach in Asia, and quite suddenly, Beach Number 7 on Havelock Island found a place – and a name, ‘Radhanagar’ – on the traveller’s map. A two hour flight from the Indian mainland followed by a three hour ferry and a forty five minute tuk tuk ride through a country road lined with warnings about stray saltwater crocodiles and photos of an elephant swimming in the open seas (she passed away recently) proved to be only small annoyances for intrepid travellers headed for this wide stretch of soft white sand lapped by clear blue waters and backed by dense forests of Padauk. That trickle of tourists has now turned into a small but sizeable flow, but thankfully, both the beach and the island are far from turning tourist traps, and you remain more likely to enjoy the place in solitude than in hordes.
