Morning at Mallick Ghat, Kolkata
Calcutta is a city of contradictions, ‘a daily festival of human existence, simultaneously noble and squalid, cultured and desperate… a city that you feel more than you see’. One of the best places to experience the city as such is at Mallick Ghat, a riverfront bathing area and flower market right below the iconic Howrah Bridge. The stench of urine mingles with the fragrance of freshly plucked flowers, the sound of temple bells mixes with the noise of road traffic, the sight of the destitute contrasts with the grandeur of the bridge above, the frenzy of the flower sellers juxtaposed against the placid flow of the river. It all makes for a very decadent, very heady mix.
